The
Fly Agaric ( also known as Fly Amanita ) is the classic fairy-tale
mushroom. Stem - 8-10cm up, 1-2.5cm across
Cap - 6-15cm across
Spores - Off-white
Edibility - Poisonous ( if eaten in large quantities )
Stem has ring, flakes on cap
Gills - crowded; off-white
Mycorrhizal with birch or spruce, usually
on acidic soil. In Eastern North America,
the cap can be different shades of orange. Often found in troops,
sometimes in fairy
rings.
